FOOD FOR HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS

HEALTHY FOOD FOR YOUR TEETH :

After talking to a lot of patient who came into my clinic I understand one thing that there is less awareness in our community regarding food which is good and bad for our teeth and gums so I decided to write a small blog regarding food good or bad for our teeth and gums. There is an old saying :

YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT

1. APPLE AND CARROTS :

Chewing apple and carrots increase salivation which further neutralizes the bacteria that causes cavities we should cut them directly and eat them with our teeth because it acts as an abrasive and keep our teeth and gums clean.

2. MILK AND CHEESE :

Milk and its products are not only packed with bone-fortifying calcium but are also rich in protein casein, which helps in reducing the acid levels in the mouth caused by harmful bacteria. Cheese prevents cavities by increasing salivation in our mouth. It is very high in phosphates and calcium, which is very good for enamel and neutralizes the acid in the mouth.

3. TEA:

Green, as well as black tea, helps in lowering the growth of bacteria which causes cavities and gum disease because it contains a compound called polyphenol. Green tea kills the bacteria which causes plaque accumulation leading to cavities and gum diseases.

4. ONION :

It contains the antibacterial sulfur compound, making it very good for dental health. it should be eaten fresh and uncooked.

5. SPINACH :

Remember POPEYE the sailor man cartoon character always emphasis on spinach, I think he is absolutely right. Spinach has a lot of vitamins and minerals.it is a fantastic source of vitamin A, vitamin c, and folic acid which is essential for good dental health. Spinach is a very good source of antioxidants which removes the oxidizing agent which is harmful to our body.

6. YOGURT :

Unsweetened yogurt is a very good source of probiotics which is essential for our dental health as probiotics or good bacteria replace the bad bacteria from our mouth and gut.

7. ALMONDS:

Almonds are superb for our teeth because they are a great source of calcium and protein and are very low in sugar. We should eat at least 8 to 10 almonds a day. it will be great if we can add a fresh green salad and dairy products along with almonds. Remember our diet makes a big difference when it comes to an attractive and healthy smile.

8. Broccoli :

This is a great source of protein, vitamin C, and calcium which helps in maintaining good dental health. Broccoli aids in maintaining a bright smile due to its iron content which forms a type of protective layer on the tooth surface.

9. NUTS AND SEEDS:

Nuts and seeds are abrasive in their texture so it helps in removing plaque and stains from our teeth. It contains omega-3 fatty acid present in walnut which decreases the risk of gum diseases that further damages the teeth.

10. ALOE VERA :

Egyptians called aloe vera a plant of immortality and it is known as Ghritkumari in Hindi and Koraphada in Marathi. It has immense anti-inflammatory properties as it contains salicylic acid also which is a base material for Aspirin, which makes it very useful in aches and pain.
